MEDTAPP is a unique opportunity through the Healthcare Access Initiative, which allows students from various healthcare professions to work together in interdisciplinary teams to learn and implement the core competencies of patient-centered care, evidence-based practice, interdisciplinary teamwork, informatics, and quality improvement.
Ohio University offers two courses for students within this program, each with different intentions:
Interprofessional Rural Healthcare
This is a course to enhance Interprofessional Health Science education involving future healthcare providers from multiple fields including: Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, Music Therapy, Medicine, Dietetics, and Nursing. The course is designed to align with the Institute of Medicine’s key core competencies of patient-centered care, informatics, interdisciplinary teams, evidence-based practice, and quality improvement. This course develops interdisciplinary teams with representatives from each participating field and requires them to collaborate to learn about how mobile technologies can enhance service provision and collaboration among healthcare providers. These learning experiences take the form of individual assignments and team-based assignments including: experiments with different apps and completion of case-based assignments.
Interprofessional Health Teams
This course is designed to promote interprofessional interaction of students from various healthcare professions including: Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, Music Therapy, Medicine, Dietetics, and Nursing in order to simulate the expectations for teamwork in the workplace. The purpose is to learn from one another and value what each profession contributes to the care of the patient and what the patient contributes to patient-centered care within interdisciplinary practice. In addition, teamwork, efficacy, safety and efficiency will be stressed in the examination, care, and potential discharge of the patient.
